Q: What sort of bedding should I use?
A: I highly suggest Cell-Sorb Plus: http://www.cell-sorb-plus.com/ "Cell-Sorb Plus is a patented product developed and marketed by Fangman Specialties, Inc. Its outstanding odor control makes it the ideal bedding for most small animals. It is an innovative solution to your pet waste needs."
I use it exclusively and it works great. If, for whatever reason, you don't want to go with Cell-Sorb Plus, you can use shredded newspaper (not the shiny ads) or fleece pieces cut into 5-6 inch squares. Make sure if you use cloth material that it will not give fray off strings that could cause injury.
I now do NOT suggest using Carefresh bedding (any kind). I have heard that some rats will eat it and it can cause blockage in the intestine causing death or very large vet bills.
I do not recommend any kind of wood shavings because some rats could be allergic to the wood dust or the wood itself. You could also use pieces of fleece or even felt, just make sure that there are no threads or strings that could get wrapped around the rats foot or tail that could cause injury. Material can be washed but should only be reused as long as it's in good condition, once rats start chewing and destroying material, it should be replaced.
