Correct Breathing to Better Singing
Of course, we all know how to breathe. But for singers, it`s about taking in the correct amount of air and controlling it to make a pleasant sound. Student often ask how to sing better and I always stress the importance of good breathing.
Normal breathing consists of two phases of approximately the same duration, breathing in and breathing out. During inhalation, the rib cage should expand, yet how many of us breathe in and the chest expands as we only take shallow breaths. Think of putting air into a balloon and that is what the lungs should look like – they should expand in all possible directions. The chest rises and expands the diaphragm contracts and descends. The lungs fill with air, the air tubes within the lung lengthen and widen
Strong Abdominal Muscles Help You To Sing Well
In the normally fit person, the abdomen will not bulge out when you inhale for the normal tautness and tension of the abdominal wall prevents such expansion. But if the muscles of the abdomen are relaxed – such as when you are lying down – the abdomen will give way to increased internal pressure and bulge out. Should this happen during singing you must strengthen your abdominal muscles by special exercises.
Relax Your Way To A Better Voice
You must start by being aware or your internal sensations when you inhale and exhale normally. Adopt a strong and relaxed posture and take in as much air as you possibly can and you will notice that this produces a sensation of fullness and stiffness. Such a deep breath is not suited to singing as any stiffness prevents the singer from moving freely and interferes with the control of the air for singing.
Having said that, you do need to take in enough air to sustain you through the phrases of the song.
Breathe Your Way To A Better Voice
To check that you are breathing correctly, place your flat hands on your abdomen, fingers touching and breathe in. You should notice that as the air fills your lungs, your diaphragm starts to expand and your fingers will move further apart.
Of course, you will not always have the time to take in a full breath and so you will need to get used to taking quick breaths to sing through a phrase.Making The Right Sound
Imagine you are surprised by something and be aware of your normal reactions. You will probably:
1 - Take a quick breach
2 - Open your mouth slightly
3 - Raise your chest and cheeks
4 - Adopt a joyful expression and say something like “ah”
As the pitch rises so the exclamation “ah” increases.
It is not important that the singer knows all the anatomical details and their function for singing, but you must be aware of the sensations accompanying the working of your instrument. At the end of the day it is your creativity that will enable you to manipulate your intricate instrument and learn how to sing well
